So, I'm going to be picking up the Anniversary Edition some time this
week, so I can start playing again. It's literally been years (quit a
couple months before PoP), and my account long ago succumbed to
overdue bills. So, I'm starting 100% fresh.

Now, I'm looking for server recommendations. I know that the low-
level population is more or less non-existant, but I was wondering if
there was any chance at all to find folks. I enjoy grouping, but I'll
only have 8hrs or so a week to play, so it's not like I'm in a hurry
to level up and raid.

Anyone know of a server/guild that is pretty casual-friendly, enjoys
grouping, maybe even raids casually? I figure I'll be able to level
up relatively quickly if there's a decent population of folks from
20-40 to group with.

One more thing :P

I checked out the "Returning Players FAQ" on the EQ forum, and it
seemed pretty helpful, although limited (all the links were broken).
Anyone know of a similar FAQ/guide to check out? Basically...the
obvious things that you should know if you've been playing lately.

I think that new links were posted further down in that discussion.
I am not certain about this.

Crescent Reach is the new low level area and its more likely to find
low level toons there. The old cities are dead, as are many of the
old zones. If I go to Kelethin, and see 2 other players, its
crowded.

I have seen claims the Crafting skillups are faster in Crescent
Reach than in Abysmal Sea. 15-20 minutes instead of an hour to reach
skill level 54. I haven't actually trired that.

The quest gear you can get in Crescent Reach and Blightfire Moors is
better than many older zone gear.

There is mention on the official forums, I forget the server name,
where they have started a guild for returning/new players who want
to go up in levels, etc.

Ah, here it is: New and Returning players come to Druzzil Ro/Xev.
It is in the Newbie Zone forum.

While not specifically geared to "returning players", the FAQ that
I post here each month does include many tips about recently added
or changed features, not to mention many tricks that have been
around forever but many people still don't know. :-)

I'll be posting it again in about a week, but meanwhile the link's
in my sig below.

I've heard of some guild on Bristlebane (Kicking Snakes) that was formed
specifically to cater to people returning to EQ, but I can't speak for the
server's population. I *can*, however, tell you that, as an alt-aholic, I
see more than my share of the low level game, and on Stromm, the population
is pretty good, relatively speaking, from the tutorial on up.

One option would be to join the Combine server. Since its listed as the
new player server, a good chunk of the new and returning players end
up there, so there's a constant influx of people on the newplayers channel.

Combine was more attractive early on, when you were starting out along
with everyone else, though, now you'll be competing (to the extent there
is a competition) with people who have a year under their belts.

This isn't a big deal for most classes, healers, DPS sorts and the like,
but buffers will find themselves up against higher level buffers (a
constant shaman complaint), slowers up against higher level slowers, and
warriors competing for the coveted MA slot against higher level, better
geared and more AA'd warriors.

A casual player won't care, but in certain classes, if you want to reach
the top of your field, you'd pretty much be stuck waiting for another
new server to open.

I'm definitely contemplating the Combine, just because it seems like
it would have a higher low-level population. I think I'd really like
to have The Serpent's Spine, though, since my time constraints will
limit my playtimes and it seems like that's better place to go to
level up.

My Anniversary Edition is downloading now, so hopefully I'll be on
tonight :) (oh how I wish I had LotD!)

Well, I didn't know you had to do a /movelog to get your characters
out of the trial. Not sure how long that takes, either. Anyway, the
wizard will probably go to Stromm. If the load times were shorter, I
would have liked to do a /who 1 40 on every server, but that would
probably take several hours :P
