Oldie but Goodie - Spawning the AC

This is mostly out of curiosity, since I've got 25+ more levels before
I need to go and find him, but did anyone ever *really* find out what
was up with the AC? I can't find anything more recent than 2001 or so
in my Google searching. Was some real method found, did everyone just
decide it was random, do people even get jboots anymore? I heard they
revamped North/South Ro and the Oasis and was curious if he was still
there.

I saw any number of methods for spawning the AC in SRo, and tried
several of them, never had any luck.

I did kill him several times in OOT, however. It was easy, if mind
numbing, he spawned in one specific spot with a PH every ( some short
predictable time. 6 minutes? Its been a while). Kill the PH, and go
back to watching TV or something... or if you wanted to be productive,
pull mobs over from the nearby Seafury island to kill in the meantime.

The OOT AC was higher level, so not quite as desirable, but far far far
easier than any of the proposed methods for spawning the SRo AC, even
had they worked.

The revamp of OOT may have changed this, the revamp of SRo may have
changed that. I haven't tried either since long before the changes.

Why? Because there have been changes in the game since the heyday of
JBoots:

For one thing, TBoots were added to the game. For 5Kpp (a little more,
even with best faction/cha, but around that) you can get boots that are
almost as good; they are exactly the same except there is a short cast
time instead of Insta Click. 5K is easier to get than spawning the
Ancient Cyclops... and its easier these days than it once was.

For another, a slight change was made to PC running speed vs that of
most mobs. Once, we all ran slightly slower than mobs, which meant we
could never escape them and had to survive being hit in the back all the
way to a zone line. Now, we're all slightly faster than most mobs,
which means if we're unencumbered and don't get caught on the geometry,
we can usually get away if we can just get out of reach in the first
place... particularly with a little added boost from jumping early in
the chase.

More visibly, the addition of the Run AA means almost everyone level 52
or higher runs nearly as fast as JBoot speed without needing any item or
buff. You need to spend 6 points in the first tier of AA, and there
really aren't any particularly useful ones other than Run, so its a rare
person that doesn't do this. Knowing you'll be buying that, its less
vital that you go out and get JBoots to speed you up for the brief time
until you get there.

And the bazaar and various SOW potions also badly hurt the JBoot trade.
SOW is faster than JBoots, and the potions have a decent duration, its
quite possible to keep yourself SOWed for relatively little cash outlay.

Note that the potions and Run AA combine to make a really powerful
counter argument; use potions to bridge that gap until you get run and
never need the potions again... so the thought that the JBoots will pay
off in the long run doesn't work either.

Fabled JBoots were something a lot of people were interested in, I was
AFK during the Fabled month so I don't know how that panned out, but
there might be some info in there which might also apply to spawning the
regular AC if you're still interested.

Spent hours and hours and hours there with my monk, but did finally
get my ring. Super boring camp, but it seemed better than killing for
days in SRo.

Ah ok. I figured game changes would have had a lot to do with it. Do
Run AAs and SoW/Jboots not stack? And one more question, what is
Fabled all about? I see it mentioned in passing a lot, but haven't
been able to find out much more. Sounds like it was tied to an
anniversary or something?

This is correct. From what I gather, EQ originally launched in March
a little over 8 years ago. In recent years, they have had a special
event run every year for a month, starting in mid-March. During this
time, selected old named mobs are beefed up as Fabled versions. For
example, instead of Drelzna (who used to drop JBoots) spawning in
Najena, the Fabled Drelzna spawns instead, to drop Fabled JBoots.
Fabled mobs are usually far tougher than the non-Fabled versions, and
the drops are correspondingly better too. Fabled exist over a wide
range of levels, from Fabled Fippy Darkpaw to what were once end-game
raid mobs (and with the Fabled beefing up, are again). The first time
this was done, the developers restricted themselves to the "old
world" (before Kunark). Each year, they have brought back the old
Fabled mobs and added one more expansion's worth (in order of
release). This past March, Fabled Luclin mobs were introduced (e.g.
Fabled Yelloweyes in Paludal Caverns).

In short, don't expect to see the Fabled mobs spawn again until next
March.

Prelgor answered about Fabled stuff in general (and I think I'll save
that response and fold it into the FAQ at some point).

Regarding the Fabled Jboots, they do not involve the Ancient Cyclops
at all; the fabled boots drop directly from Fabled Drelzna just like
the original jboots used to drop from regular Drelzna.

The fabled boots are the equivalent of Run 5, and none of my characters
have more than Run 3 yet, so this last Fabled Month I went and got boots
for most of my characters who hadn't gotten them last year. (The druid
turned up her nose at them. :-) In a fit of conspicuous twinkage, I even
unloaded enough junk from my bazaar mule to let me waddle out to Najena
and get a set of boots; makes running around the bazaar much quicker!

Oh, and the fact that the boots are insta-cast can be a big deal,
especially if you're already running away from a mob when you notice
that your old movement buff has worn off...

I got him about 10 times in Sro and made a tidy profit MQing the boots.
(Bought my KEI spell for 35k from it back in the day)
Here are a few things to know...

He only spawns at night.
There are a number of special spawns which are placeholders for him. I
forget them all, and most are obvious, but there are a couple which arn'y.
"A mummy" is one to watch out for. Kill it and watch the tracking list (if
youre a druid) and the next spawn will appea at the top of the tracking
list.

Its exactly the same as quillmane in SKarana with a number of special spawns
with very unnoticeable names that can be killed to spawn him. Once you find
one of the special spawns its easy to keep finding them because they appear
at the top of your track window.

The same thing happens in frontier mountains too, except there are 3 sets of
spawns there. The one in the southwest is often hard to pickup because the
placeholder is usually "a hill giant" amount other hill giants.

Another zone the same thing happens is rathe mountains, and this is the
spawns thatthe gnome is in for the boots handin. Again, one of the spawns is
"a drake", but in this cae there are not other "a drake"'s that spawn in the
zone.

I used to make a tidy profit MQ'ing these, but since the revamp and
combining of the zones, I haven't seen the AC at all, not even once.

Some words about AC in Ocean of Tears.

In general chat I heard a player in distress in OoT. Seems he was caught in
geometry. With my 75 druid I went in to rescue. We evac'ed and upon
questioning, found that he/she had come to do AC for the JBoots quest.

I lead to the island across from Seafuries, where on the new map "Ancients"
was noted and approximately where AC used to be. Not seeing much that
would be helpful, I consulted Bestiary and read that this AD now is on the
island WITH the Seafuries, west of the deserted Druid ring.

When we landed the area was crawling with Seafury Cyclopses but among the
first things that the companion targeted was AC himself. I dove right in,
withstanding the blows of not only him but several Seafuries as well.
Companion and I ported out, him with the ring.
