Luclin Quest for some Cleric Twink Gear

Was thinking of doing The Conspiracists: Arbogast and Miller quest in
Katta for my cleric twink. (I don't know... sue me. I periodically get
in a mood where I just want to go do some long arsed quest just for the
heck of it if the reward is worth anything.) The details are here:

http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?quest=1495

We were talking about having my 61 wizard and my wife's 61 necro do the
killing bits, parking the cleric in the right areas for looting any no
drop stuff, etc.

First off, the loot. A couple of items that look like they might not be
too bad for a mid twenties cleric to tote around.

Cloak of Truth
LORE ITEM MAGIC ITEM
Weight: 13.0 Size: LARGE
Slot: BACK
AC: +15 Str: +10 Dex: +5 Cha: +5 Wis: +8
Classes: All Classes
Races: All Races
Slot 1: Type 7

and

Shimmering Mace
MAGIC ITEM NO DROP
Weight: 4.5 Size: MEDIUM
Slot: PRIMARY SECONDARY
Damage: 6 Delay: 24
Ratio: 4 Average
Damage Bonus: 13 (lvl 65)
Comparative Efficiency: 52
Offhand Efficiency: 15
Wis: +6 Fire Resist: +5 Magic Resist: +5
Weapon Skill: One Hand Blunt
Classes: Ranger Shaman Druid Cleric Paladin Shadowknight Bard Monk Rogue
Warrior
Races: All Races
Slot 1: Type 4

Questions: Do you suppose it's worth it to get these two items? They
don't seem to be level restricted. Will the early quest mobs you have to
speak with even talk to a lower level character I wonder?

Are any of the mobs required going to give a problem to a couple of post
sixty characters? They don't look that bad, except possibly the Ahkeva
Ruins bits. Getting the two Akuel Xi Ans Vius is either going to require
killing some Shadow Reavers, according to one account, or possibly going
after Rygan Anisher.
http://eqbeastiary.allakhazam.com/search.shtml?id=7206

I haven't spent much time ever in Akheva, except running through on
raids quite a while ago. Don't know if that's feasible for a small group
or not.

Anyway, it looks like a kind of fun quest for my twink and my main. But
you hate to start on something like this only to find out it was for
nothing.

I recall when this wasn't a bad item for a level 55 cleric to be toting
around... course that was several expansions ago and all, but its not
really bad at all. There's also a bonus to your meditation skill, which
will mean a lot more to a low level than to someone who's skill is
already at cap; basically you'll get 10% more mana back while sitting on
your butt, which of course is a cleric's principle occupation.

This item, on the other hand, seems very lame. Better ratio weapons
abound, the two resists are pathetic, so you are left with the 6 wis.
These days a twink cleric would have to work hard not to be up at 200+
wis by level 20, and then LDoN will start feeding you wis augments to
stack on top of that. As a bonus, the thing is no drop so you can't
even hand it off to some level 1 character you find wandering around
lost in POK.

6/24? I'd be embarassed to even call myself a twink with something that
lame.

Funny thing is, recently I've been playing numerous characters on
Discord, and my most prized possession on many of them has been a
storebought Short Sword, which has the mighty ratio of 4/22. 6/24? I'd
be a God!
...
I don't know enough about the quest to say, but AR is either pretty
easy, or incredibly hard, depending on what you are after. Easy is the
mobs, which generally aren't bad for their level, and huntable in your
mid 50s, by 61 they should be pushovers. Hard are the traps which
trigger a kind of mob (mind wurm?) that proc a mana tap, and which seem
to deliberately go for mana users far more than regular mobs might.
Sucked dry of mana and being beat to a pulp puts a real damper on most
classes combat ability... unless you were going in with a pure melee
group, which isn't likely.

(hmm, I don't know if their ability also sucks down a bard's mana pool,
at any rate they wouldn't stop him singing, but dry mana pool means no
more charms)

It seems blatently unfair that things can suck away bard mana but we
can't get twitched by necros or get mana off a mod rod... I mean, its
bad enough that KEI and bard song don't work, but if you can take away
mana with the same spell/proc that effects "real" mana, then you should
be able to get it back the same way.

If bards weren't the most powerful class in the game I guess we could
complain about this.

Aren't you forgetting something? Bards suck, they are a terrible class,
not even worth looking at, honest.

Actually, the mace is just a side effect sort of drop. I was attracted
to the quest for the cloak of truth, which is better than my current
back slot item for the cleric. I'm trying to recall what I've currently
got in primary... (I sort of threw together this alt's gear in one day
quite a while back.) I think it's a centi war hammer. So even though
it's crap, it may still be a minor upgrade until I can focus on getting
him something better.
...
Well, we can only try I suppose, as long as there's nothing else
precluding the twink from getting this loot. Worst that will happen is
we'll die and have an epic cleric camped outside the zone. I've never
even seen this Rygan Anisher character, so not sure if he's doable or
not. But if the Shadow Reavers drop the item I need, that might be an
option unless I hit a bunch of those traps you're talking about. Perhaps
I should try to conscript a rogue friend for that trip.

Oooh! I did this quest way back when Luclin first came out - back when Peqi
was camped 24x7.

Cloak of Truth
and
Shimmering Mace
And the really funny thing is... I did it for the Shimmering Mace. =) I
already had a better back item and the meditation mod did nothing for me. I
ended up selling the Cloak for some nice plat. In fact, when I auctioned it
(this was before the Bazaar was working and before you could link items) I
got several tells asking me if the Cloak was real - items that modified
caster skills were relatively new.

The Mace, on the other hand, gave me a nice WIS bonus, and being a human
cleric I was way behind the curve on getting WIS maxed, so every +WIS item
was like gold to me. And, at the time, there were darned few items that
offered better WIS in your PRI slot.

Nowadays, of course, the Mace is very passe. Heck, at level 56 you can cast
Hammer of Judgement that gives you a decent PRI weapon: 14/18 AC 10 Dex
25 Wis 5 HP 35 Mana 35. Even if you never melee it's a nice stat item.

As for the Cloak itself... the meditate mod is going to be mostly
meaningless. When I got the Cloak I had already maxed out meditation, so I
gave it to a ranger friend to test regeneration. Without the cloak, it took
her seven minutes forty seconds to get from zero health to full health (with
no KEI or anything). With the cloak, it took her seven minutes six seconds.
So the difference in mana regen is negligible.

If you're looking for a slightly easier if more annoying to quest back item,
try the Aegis of Life: AC 12 Wis 10 Disease 25. It fits on both your SEC
and back slots and give a nice WIS bonus. And even if you do find a better
back item, it's still nice to have in the bank if you ever need to bump up
your Disease resists. The quest is pretty simple: camp a spot in South
Karanas for both the living and undead version of Lord Grimrot. The
annoying part is that it's a four-hour spawn, and the Grimrot spawns are
uncommon, so often you just get a skeleton. What I did was to bind myself
near the spawn point, then use the spires in NK to go somewhere else and do
stuff, then gate back when the spawn timer was due.

A nice alternative to all of that, if you have the plat, is to get someone
to make your twink some crafted armor. A typical back item is a Salubrious
Heraldic Cloak: AC 16 Wis 15 HP 40 Mana 40. The price on Heraldic items
has fallen through the basement because of ornate armor; you could probably
get a cloak like that for 20K. Recommended level is 45 but even at lower
levels the stats aren't bad.

It's not too bad; move forward in AR until you get to the fallen pillar and
camp that area. I was lucky; back in the day AR often had a group there,
and I sat at the zone line until the item dropped and traded two stacks of
peridots for the item.

That's the primary reason to do that quest; it's fun. =) The conspiratists
have some very mildly amusing dialogue, and you get quite the sense of
satisfaction from getting the items. These days Peqi is up all the time -
he used to be the bottleneck for the quest.

The quest is a bit of a timesink, though. You can buy better stat items,
depending on your plat.

Jazz,

You might want to pick up a Soulstripper:
http://lucy.allakhazam.com/item.html?id=40007

Camping the Enraged Soulstealer (he's a medium tough level 50 mob,
your L61 duo would be more than adequate) could take anywhere from
30 minutes to several hours, but the Druid I played on Stromm server
over the summer absolutely loved that weapon. The proc doesn't work
until L40, but even doing just LDoN in pickup groups you will level
very rapidly to 40. Also, while you're in Dulak you could park the
Cleric nearby and get him the drops for the Temperance quest:
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?quest=2368
if you didn't mind killing green/baby-blue mobs with your L61s.

Camping the Enraged Soulstealer (he's a medium tough level 50 mob,
I was surprised at how easy this camp was... A 52 cleric,
2 55-56 shaman(s), and a 5x paladin held this for about 4 hours one
night for something to do with the paladin epic, and among the other
loot we got were 2 soulstrippers... We all invised in to the "right
spot" :-) for the epic camp and the pally pulled the fish guys to us.
And later Chester's ghost.

You can see that the Enraged Soulstealer has a soulstripper
because he wields it.
